The Paris Olympics Last Supper/Bacchanal/Dionysus Drag Show. Call it what you want - it matters not a whit. It's enough to know that it's all in the name of Diversity™ and Inclusivity™.
For as much hub-bub as this video has reportedly caused, it's notoriously difficult to find. I haven't actually seen the damn thing yet, though not for lack of trying. Every time I think I've found one, it doesn't work. Highly suspect.
At any rate, the show appears to be as tasteless as one would expect, although just saying that is enough to get one branded some sort of "phobe" or as someone from the easily offended "extreme alt-right". Good thing no one on the left is extreme or easily offended these days.
I wonder if in the name of inclusivity™ they had considered also including Muhammad in drag just to round things out. I'm sure that wouldn't have offended anyone at all…
But I digress.
It's a wonder to me how many “voices of reason” come out of the woodwork as soon as there's an uproar like this. These people calmly explain that what we thought we saw, we didn't really see. No, no, no it wasn't really a mockery of the Last Supper, it was an ancient Greek Bacchanal because you know, the Olympics are ancient and Greek. And also (in case you're not quite hip to that groove) a Bacchanalia according to Merriam Webster is:
a Roman festival of Bacchus celebrated with dancing, song, and revelry.
Oh, and Webster's second definition: an Orgy.
Well, great! So it's not really a mockery of the Last Supper after all. What a relief! It's just a bunch of hyper-sexual drag queens depicting an ancient drunken orgy with the god of wine-making, fertility and ecstasy. Well, bring the kids back in the room then!
Like I said, I'm still trying to see this video, but apparently the Olympic Committee has since deleted it from their YouTube channel, or at least hidden it. You can speculate on your own as to why that might be. I suppose I'll have to be satisfied with the pictures.
Personally, I'm not overly bothered by people making fun of Christianity, or any other religion for that matter (although I do view it as childish and very disrespectful) but that's not even the point here. It is worth noting however, that there's much more tolerance for that in today's climate than there would be for mocking Islam, for instance. Anyway, it's totally irrelevant.
The real issue here is the same as it always is when hyper-sexualized drag shows are featured prominently in hugely popular family-friendly events:
It's simply inappropriate and the only reason anyone would be okay with it is either that they're virtue-signaling to their friends, or they're afraid of offending the tiny minority who are pushing it, or both.
All this BS about it just being offensive to Christians is nothing but a distraction. I believe you could call that gaslighting. Yes, it's not the fault of the drag queens or the Olympic committee that half the world was offended - oh no! It's the Christians because they're so prudish and conservative. Well here's a Newsflash: it wasn't just Christians that were offended at the opening ceremonies and I think the fact that those videos are now conveniently missing underscores that point.
It was already offensive entirely on its own, simply for what it was. Or at the very least completely inappropriate - even without the implied ménage à trois at the beginning. By the way, that video has also mysteriously disappeared.🤔
As is all too common when these things occur, I saw many people throw up their hands in exasperation and say, Alright already, we see you! Enough, now can we please just move on?!
Here's the thing: this is precisely the point and the real end goal, namely that it will never be enough. Just like you can never apologize enough for causing certain types of offences and you can never put too much money into searching for “unmarked graves,” or "green" initiatives, or anything with the word decolonize in it. These may seem completely unrelated, but it's the exact same totalitarian mindset that drives them all. This mindset gives no room for questions, no room for debate, and definitely no room for outright disagreement.
The narrative that is now being established is that all those religious people were a little too quick to judge and if they'd have just had an open mind, they would have known that it was really all about bringing people together (in a drunken orgy, but still). Now the story will likely attempt to shift away from the fact that the whole thing was a colossal failure and an embarrassment (and offensive in its own right) and focus on the reaction of the right.
This is my meager attempt to not let that happen.
Aw man of course you'd get triggered by theatrics... this is boring.
Sounds like it upset all the right people in all the best ways! 👏👏👏 well done Paris!
The city is literally called ‘the city of love’, it’s home of Moulin Rouge, it’s the birthplace of porn. Parisians are proud of this image and savor any opportunity to make the prudish foreigners blush with some risqué art or completely unnecessary gay sex scenes. 😂
Paris is the most diverse, most tolerant, creative and freedom-loving community you’ll find anywhere. It’s what countries like Aus, Canada and the US often pretend to be but fail miserably. I was in Paris, watching the ceremony with Parisians, and I can tell you their favorite part of the opening ceremony was knowing that conservatives would be upset.
